Up Seattle » Salmon Run Slideshow

As I mentioned above, we happened on a salmon run on the Wenatchee River while in Leavenworth. This was yet another "happy accident" of a day that started as, "let's see the falls, then maybe catch a movie". After eating dinner on the deck at Gustav's overlooking the river and the mountains, we decided to walk around town and ended up roaming down to the riverfront park. As we were walking out an older German man walked by and asked, " Are you looking for zee Salmon?". He then proceeded to aim us down a trail for a 5 minute walk to a bend in the river where salmon were jumping as they worked their way upstream. "Look for zee man drinking a beer, and you will be at zee place", he imparted with a wave as he walked away (I don't know if the guy with a beer is a fixture, but he was a good landmark. Turns out he was just another tourist watching the show). We followed his directions, came around the bend in the river and salmon were jumping everywhere! 2-3 would hit the water every 15-30 seconds. Neither of us had seen anything like this before so we were really excited to be able to witness this bit of nature at work. We stayed there for almost an hour and had to pull ourselves away so we could get back up the trail before sunset. I have some still pictures of them jumping, but I also animated some of them (thanks to a camera that shoots 5 frames/second and Photoshop). You may have to wait a little bit for the animations to load and run, but if they don't run you can right-click the picture and try to save it to your computer and run it locally.
